Nombe
New Zealand’s first Japanese stand bar or “Tachinomi”,
translated literally -drinking while standing up
Standing at a bar for a quick drink on the way home
was a way for middle-aged white-collar workers to relieve
the stresses of the working day and is part of the
Japanese salary man’s culture.
But the custom of drinking while standing is no longer
limited to disgruntled businessmen. More and more trendy
bars in Japan and restaurants have been setting up
their own standing counters, which have proven
particularly popular among young women.
Tachinomi encourages patrons to get to know their
drinking neighbours as there is no fixed seating and
is a great place to stop on the way to the theatre,
movies or meeting place for friends
